How to Pray Before Scrolling: A Simple Daily Practice
You reach for your phone without thinking. Before opening an app, try using that moment as a gentle reminder to pray.
It is easy for scrolling to become automatic. The goal isn't to make every moment on your phone feel wrong. It's to make room for the habits and relationships you want to prioritize, including time with God.
1. Notice the moment you reach for your phone
Pay attention to when you tend to open social apps: while waiting, feeling stressed, taking a break, or avoiding a difficult task. Naming the moment makes it easier to choose what happens next.
2. Pause for one intentional breath
Instead of immediately tapping the app, pause briefly. You don't need a long ritual; a few seconds of attention is enough to interrupt an automatic habit.
3. Pray about something specific
Choose a person, decision, worry, or reason for gratitude. A short prayer can be as simple as asking God for wisdom in one situation or thanking Him for someone you love. You can write a list of personal prayer petitions in advance if deciding what to pray about is difficult in the moment.
4. Decide whether to open the app
After praying, ask whether you still want to scroll. Sometimes a few minutes of entertainment is fine. Other times, you'd rather call a friend, return to work, rest, or put your phone away. The point is to make the choice intentionally.
5. Make the habit easy to repeat
Start with just one distracting app instead of trying to redesign your entire phone routine. Keep your goal realistic: consistency matters more than a perfect streak. If you miss a day, resume the next time you notice the habit.

Prayer isn't a performance or a requirement to earn God's attention. This practice is simply a way to make space for intentional connection with Him in moments that would otherwise pass unnoticed.
